Mission and Welfare Society - IndiaOur 50-bed hospital and village clinic, opened in 1998, provides free health care for the poor and destitute people in and around Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh State, India. The population of the area served is approximately 4 million. Staff consists of: 6 doctors (some are part-time), 8 RN's, 4 multipurpose workers, 1 technician, 1 pharmacist, 2 HIV/AIDS counselors, 1 watchman. Major illnesses treated: TB, malaria, and HIV. Typical surgeries: hysterectomy for cervical cancer, thyroidectomy, skin graft, septoplasty, and tonsillectomy. Backlog of surgeries, because of lack of sufficient funds, is more than 3000. Number of patients treated since opening: more than one million (as of June 1, 2006). This includes: 202,000 TB cases, 136,000 malaria cases, 53,000 HIV/AIDS cases, and 2975 surgeries. A major part of our work is conducting seminars on HIV/AIDS. Over 2.5 million pieces of literature on HIV/AIDS have been distributed since the summer of 2004 during seminars at colleges, schools, social gatherings, and medical camps, and through street, marketplace, and house-to-house distribution. We estimate that more than 27 million people have been exposed to the HIV/AIDS messages. We have received plaudits from Andhra Pradesh Government officials for our work in fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic in India as well as for our other medical work. The major problem faced by the hospital is lack of medicines. By about the 15th of each month, the hospital begins to run short of medicines. Another problem area is providing fuel and maintenance for the 12-passenger hospital van used to pick up and return patients. Hospital expenses are covered by donations from concerned individuals in the USA and India. We do not receive any government assistance. The hospital was started by my family, and we still provide the majority of the support. Visit the Mission and Welfare Society - India home page. |
