York County Children’s Services promotes quality opportunities for children's instructive readiness
at all levels of capacity and further encourages self-sufficiency by offering training and support
services to parents. This is a federally funded program designed to serve eligible preschoolers
through an inclusive range of services in health, family, and education by providing a developmentally
appropriate classroom experience. These services allow Head Start children to begin Kindergarten at
the same level as their peers. Our program serves children, ages 3 & 4, who are underprivileged and
who live in York County. We have four locations throughout York County including:
- The Griffin-Yeates Learning Center, which services 64 children;
- Yorktown Elementary School with 18 children in its care;
- Grafton Bethel Elementary School, that assist 18 children; and finally
- Tabb Elementary School, which services 18 children as well.
Our Head Start program runs between September-May, Tuesday-Friday, 8:45-1:15. Our children receive
good preparation for Kindergarten by practicing how to write their name, becoming familiar with
letters of the alphabet, learning colors, and by exposure to numbers and books. They learn to
socialize with peers by using words vs. physical actions, sharing, and how to behave in social
settings, i.e. during eating times we have family style meals and encourage them to speak about
issues, feelings, and problems. Through family involvement we have Parent-teacher conferences and
we also encourage parents to volunteer and invite them to visit their child and engage in school
activities. Through involvement we also encourage parents to read to their child, practice writing
name, etc. We perform 2 home visits per year to discuss the child’s development as well.
We provide parental support through family goal setting, in which staff and family set goals towards
education and employment and establish a partnership and trust. There are varieties of opportunities
created by staff for interaction with parents throughout the year by assisting parents in learning
how to identify and access community services such as emergency assistance and refer families to
appropriate services regarding such mental health issues as: substance abuse, child abuse and
neglect, and domestic abuse. Parents are educated on these issues through prevention programs,
identification of resources, brochures, support groups, and educated staff.
We assist parents in identifying and securing access to continuing education, training and employment
opportunities by:
- Encouraging parents to volunteer and record that time for experience;
- Providing information and referrals to education and training programs; and
- Establishing a formal career path within our Head Start program.
We test our children at the beginning and end of the school year to determine progress by:
- Monitoring successes and setbacks;
- Seeking improvement in educational skills as well as emotional and social; and
- We also have a base of performance standards that we measure the child against.
This organization has informed us they are qualified to receive tax deductible contributions.
