Lions of Virginia, District 24-AFor more than eighty years, Lions Clubs around the world have been recognized for their service to the visually impaired and hearing impaired. The majority of the world's eye banks have been established by and are currently supported by Lions Clubs, as are hundreds of clinics, hospitals and eye research centers. In Virginia, Lions Clubs have been serving their communities since March of 1933. The Lions Clubs in our district raise well over a million dollars a year through various fund raising activities and return every dollar to their individual community and the world community. We provide eye exams and eye glasses, hearing exams and hearing aids, food baskets to the needy, scholarships to handicapped students, support for youth activities such as diabetes awareness programs, drug awareness programs, leader dogs for the visually impaired and hearing dogs for the hearing impaired. We own and operate a Youth Camp in the Shenandoah Mountains and participate in youth exchange programs around the world. We also locally sponsor a peace poster Association of Lions Clubs. Some of the funds we raise are used to support the Old Dominion Eye Bank in Richmond, Virginia; the Leader Dog for the Blind in Michigan; the Virginia Lions Hearing Foundation and Research Center in Charlottesville, Virginia and two mobile sight and hearing screening vans which travel to schools, retirement centers and churches throughout our district.
