Founded in 1962, the Literacy Council recruits and trains volunteers to tutor adults who need to develop basic reading, writing and English speaking skills.

Serving the counties of Arlington and Fairfax and the cities of Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax. Literacy Council students tend to be among the most economically disadvantaged members of our community. Our services include clients from over 40 social services agencies in the area: these include shelters, churches, detention centers, and housing cooperatives.

Regularly scheduled tutor training workshops are conducted throughout the year. Our 12 hour Basic Literacy and 18-hour ESL workshops are held at the Council's literacy center in Falls Church. We request a one-year tutoring commitment; no previous teaching experience is required. In addition to tutoring, volunteers are also needed for a variety of other functions including serving as computer lab aides, office assistants and organizers for our annual benefit auction.

The Literacy Council offers the Following educational programs:

Basic Literacy Program

Students who register in this program are predominantly America-born adults who need help with basic reading and writing skills. They have goals in mind: they may want to find a job, read to their children or work toward a GED. Students develop a firm base of literacy skills on which to pursue their education.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

This program serves limited-English- speaking immigrants who often have little education in their first language. With the aide of caring tutors these adults learn English. Tutors work with students to meet their individual needs: from learning to answer the telephone to preparing for US citizenship.

ESL Learning Centers

Located in Alexandria and Falls Church, the Centers offer a combination of classroom instruction, and computer-assisted learning. Each center is equipped with four to six computers and a variety of educational software for both ESL and basic literacy students. The Learning Centers Program was the recipient of the 1996 Virginia Literacy Foundation Award for outstanding Literacy Project in the Commonwealth.

Please call (703) 237-0866 or e-mail us at lcnv@pop.dn.net if you are interested in volunteering or making a contribution to support our programs.
