The Project

The Kaknock Foundation Child Youth Grass Root Center Is A Project in which you will work. You will be using public transport or office transport to get there. However, if you wish to stay just around the office premises, we can as well make that arrangements.

Volunteer Work

At CYGC we always have children & youth who come for IEC resource and activities. So beside an out reach program, you can as well help us train a football team or any relevant area of your interest.

We do have a very strong outreach program for school and community therefore you have to be ready and committed for this service.

Within community outreach program, you will be requested to help in this following areas:
  • Educating parents in parenting
  • Helping children to live a healthy life.
  • Organizing children conventions and workshops.
  • Advocating for home health education to fight diseases.
  • Help children reconciliation with parents.
  • Helping children in decision-making.
Within school out reach program, you will be requested to help in the following areas: -
  • Helping Youth And Children In Decision-Making.
  • Adolescence Sexual Reproductive Health Awareness.
  • Behavior Change As A Way Out.
  • Abstinence as a realistic form of birth control.
We always start office work from 9:00am however, staffs do report at 7:30 to prepare for fieldwork and outreach up to 5:00pm Ugandan time and some times you may be requested to go beyond time due to program need. Saturdays and Sundays are generally free days for rest.

Weather

Generally in Uganda the temperature condition vary between approximately 270C to 350C. Is this bearable? During hot seasons the roads in Uganda are rough and very dusty, whereas during rainy seasons they are flooded and slippery but generally passable.

Food and Meals

We have a lot of food in Uganda especially tropical fruits like mangoes, pineapples; jack Fruit and sweet bananas e.t.c. I am sure you will like them. Other foods include, Rice, Beans, Nuts, Cassava, Sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, and Banana e.t.c. We rarely eat meat.

We have no strict timetable to follow delete when meals should be got. Generally, we eat whenever we hungry supper (dinner) is sometimes served at 9:00p.m and breakfast is always a simple cup of coffee and bread.

People and Society

Ugandans are generally very social people, happy, kind and welcoming, you will really have a good time with us. Many children will shout at you either welcoming you or bidding you good-bye wherever you will pass. You will have to get used to it or ignore.

There is a belief in Uganda that all white men have a lot of money. As a result many will ask you for money. In such a case you simply ignore.

Stability

Our country is relatively peaceful however it is not good for white man to travel alone at night beyond ten p.m. for fear of being attached by thieves.

Volunteers Accommodation

We provide a room for volunteers in our project if a volunteer wish to take part in our programme. A clean and simple, light-filled room with a bed and mattress is sufficient for most volunteers. we are aware that our volunteers do need a space in which they can have their own privacy. rooms have a lock on the door so they can leave their valuables there without worry.

By providing quarters for the volunteer to stay in, we are able to collect a contribution from the volunteer for their accommodation. The amount that the volunteers will give has already been determined. Please check the fees section to clarify what volunteers will be bringing as a donation for our project. A volunteer who wish to either stay with a family in the area or to have a rentable building.

Duty Allocation

We specify a duty for the volunteer to be in charge of. Typical duties include:
  • Office work - using the computer etc.
  • Helping kids with their homework - put them in charge of children who are struggling with their studies, especially assigning them one-on-one attention. For educational projects, we have found volunteers work very well as teacher's assistants and concentrating on children who have literacy difficulties.
  • Running kindergarten classes, preparing classroom materials and libraries.
  • Put them as assistants in a fundraising drive.
  • Get them to take especial care of the younger children, help with changing diapers etc, washing clothes and checking they keep their bedrooms neat and tidy.
Communication

Upon receiving the volunteer's application it's very important that we reply to them immediately. We will provide participating projects with a manual to our volunteers to organise our placements and sample letters as well as a simple database to organise our bookings. We require that our volunteers regularly keep in touch with us also to inform when they would like to start a service so we can keep the website accurate with regard to placements. We also use this information to best determine where to place volunteers who are open to being placed in several projects.

Encouragement

Kaknockfoundation Provide constant feedback and encouragement to the volunteer. we understand that they need to know if they are doing what the organization want and remember we value they are in a foreign culture so we be as supportive and understanding as we can. Explain to them our culture and basic social niceties - how to greet people, how to behave in certain situations. Teach them some phrases in the local language which will endear them to the public...

Often the first week that the volunteer is staying with our organization will be one of adjustment and settling in. For some, it may be the first time they have travelled overseas, in which case, there is always likely to be a period of culture shock and uncertainty. We always be as supportive as we can during this time.

Religion

KIDS Worldwide subscribes to universal ideals in that we support the physical, mental and spiritual growth of all peoples, however, we do not allow that the volunteers programme be used as a platform for indoctrination. we respect the volunteer, regardless of their religion and particular beliefs.

It is not appropriate that we ask volunteers to take part in any religious meetings or programmes or ask them to take or teach religious classes. They will respect our beliefs and the manner in which the children are being raised, and will be open-minded in this respect. They will also be expected to behave as good examples whilst at our project.

Responsibility
  • Safety: While the volunteer is staying at our project, we must accept all reasonable responsibility to ensure their safety and well-being. They need to be shown around to enable them to get acquainted with the area and places where they will be working. Send a local person to accompany them when they go out of the compound until they are confident to go out alone without getting lost. we always be sure that the volunteer understands which areas of the city may be dangerous and how to dress accordingly so that they don't attract attention. We also schedule the hours together with the volunteer which they would be expected to be involved in duties. Outside of these times, make them aware of the hours which you expect them to return at night if they do go out.
  • Pleasure trips: If the volunteer will travel for periods of time away from the project site, in an activity unrelated to that of our project, we will not be responsible during these periods.
  • Health: Should a volunteer fall ill whilst in our care, We always ensure that they can get good quality medical treatment from a registered doctor.
