Volunteer PetenVolunteer Petén is a small, independent non-for-profit organization created in 2002 by its director Matthew R. Peters out of the need to generate projects to help protect the vast rainforest in Northern Guatemala and to help its inhabitants. Volunteer Petén centerpiece project is The Parque Nueva Juventud, which serves as a center for projects and ideas that focus on conservation, the environment, alternative technologies, and education. Within its 150 acres, one can explore new ways to reforest damaged and cut-over land, approaches to organic farming, preserved nature trails, ideas for eco-tourism, an education center, small sustainable animal projects, and much more. The idea of the Parque Nueva Juventud is to lead by example. By showing the results of conservation projects, be it reforestation, eco-tourism, or organic farming, we can help to educate and encourage locals to explore and invest in these types of projects.
