Little HugsTo encourage today's youth to volunteer and invest time in their communities that volunteering can help them to become a better person, and to acknowledge the ill and elderly as people and to make them believe that there are those who care for them. Since our start in late February, 1999, Little Hugs has gathered over 200 volunteers using the Internet. Currently, the organization is run only by the founder, Barbara who is the recipient of the "Millennium Dreamer Award" from McDonald's and Disney and was featured in "CosmoGIRL! Magazine" as "Heroine of the Month." Volunteers of Little Hugs send cards and letters that they have made for the ill and elderly through the post office box address. Barbara and local volunteers then bring the cards to nursing homes and hospitals and personally visit each person who receives a card. The staff's first visit ever was to Prospect Park Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Prospect Park, Pennsylvania. Little Hugs has made several visits so far and has received many letters of thanks from the recipients and their friends and family members. Funds for postage, the post office box, and public relations services are raised from various yard sales and craft sales and from donations of these items by volunteers. Sincerely, Barbara Petro Founder & President Little Hugs Visit the Little Hugs home page. |
