In Arms Reach, Inc., Parents behind Bars: Children in Crisis
IN ARMS REACH, INC., Parents in Prison, Children in Crisis, is a non profit 501(c)3 community based art, music, counseling and academic mentoring program, located at City College, for the City University of New York (CUNY) in partnership with the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, which strengthens family ties by arranging for youth to visit their parents in prison. Our goal is to empower young people, often traumatized and stigmatized by parental incarceration, to lead more productive, crime free lives and encourage stronger supportive bonds between generations. >B>IN ARMS REACH:
- Offers a comprehensive education in art, music, audio engineering, photography, video production, dance and creative writing.
- Empowers a child by giving him or her academic assistance with qualified mentors, the opportunity to develop new skills and realize their full potential.
- Helps build, nurture and maintain parent & child existing relationship to reduce feelings of abandonment, anger, guilt and quell the anxiety children of imprisoned parents are particularly prone--by providing FREE trips to visit their parent(s).
- Breaks the potential cycle of incarceration passed from parent to child by offering one-on-one and group counseling in a supportive setting.
- Advocate for children enrolled in the public school system through meetings with officials, involvement in curriculum, encouragement and supervision of higher grades and academic excellence.
- Increases awareness about the effects of parental incarceration on children.
- Gives the imprisoned parent a chance to help their kids and an opportunity to better themselves for the sake of their children.
Participants must be New York City residents between the ages of 7 and 18 with a parent who is currently or has previously served a prison sentence.
IN ARMS REACH recruits through after-school programs, group homes; foster care agencies, NYS and federal prisons, community-based youth and social service organizations. Participants are required to attend regularly and present their report cards in order to remain in the program.
