Harlem Educational Activities Fund, Inc.The Harlem Educational Activities Fund, Inc. (HEAF) is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt public charity whose goal is to help severely disadvantaged minority children develop the attitudes and skills that will enable them to lead satisfying and productive lives in mainstream American life. HEAF's successes have been truly remarkable, with HEAF-sponsored inner city minority chess teams repeatedly ranking "number one in the United States" in national scholastic chess competitions, with over 100 HEAF-mentored and tutored children winning admission to the most competitive and selective public high schools in the country, and with over 80 HEAF youngsters in good academic standing in colleges such as Harvard, Bryn Mawr, Haverford, Cornell, Columbia, Wesleyan, Swarthmore, Syracuse, etc. In this year of controversy over reading scores in the New York City public school system, a HEAF-sponsored fourth grade in a Central Harlem school achieved the highest reading scores in the entire five boroughs of New York. The Director of HEAF's chess programs just became the first African American in history to become an International Grand Master. Our Annual Report, which we are happy to send, tells much more about this remarkably effective organization, whose Board of Directors includes General Colin Powell, Prof. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. of Harvard, Isabel Carter Stewart of Girls,Inc, Prof Frank Levy of MIT, General George Price USA(Ret), Adam Robinson, co-founder of The Princeton Review, and Prof Sheri Berman of Princeton, among other dedicated and involved members.
