The Burden Center for the Aging, Inc. promotes the well-being of the elderly residents of the Upper East Side of Manhattan through a broad array of direct social services and volunteer programs oriented to individual, family and community needs. We are dedicated to supporting the efforts of older people to remain in their own homes living independently, safely and with dignity.

Programs Include:

----- Friendly Visiting- includes visiting, chatting, reading, and/or walking with a senior. Common hobbies may be shared with stories told to get to know each other.

----- Food Shopping- may involve the actual shopping for a homebound senior or assisting an ambulatory senior with completing his or her food list. Visiting is always part of the goal.

----- Medical Escorting- is a door-to-door escorting program that may include a wait as a senior is escorted to a doctor, medical clinic, or dentist. The senior covers transportation costs.

----- "Telefriend"- is a telephone reassurance program in which clients are called once a day, Monday through Friday, and some on Saturday, by a volunteer who offers friendly conversation. This program is a check-in system that ensures a senior's well-being.

----- The Carter Burden Luncheon Center & Senior Program- enjoys numerous activities from an art class to yoga, all of which are administered by volunteers. Serve lunch any day from Monday-Friday at 12:00 or start a new and different activity. A MEAL ON HEELS delivered on Saturdays and requires kids to be 16 and over unless there is parent supervision. Adults always welcome.

----- Adult Day Services- provides a day program for people with dementia. Lunch hour and afternoon van travel assistance needed. Help run activity groups, like music, arts & crafts, and exercise. Hours 9:30-4:00. Socializing is popular and please, don't mind the repetition.

----- "Senior Literacy in Action"- enables seniors to serve as teachers to adults who were denied educational opportunities as youth.

----- "6 Week Clean" slowly encourages clients, who hoard, to throw items away.

----- Club Without Walls- provides social opportunities for seniors to meet new people and go to new places. Volunteers needed to assist with escorting and to socialize while hearing wonderful stories.

----- "Weekend Connections" allows frail seniors to remain connected to friends, cultural opportunities, faith communities, and only requires a time commitment of 5 hours once a month.

----- "Recuperating Homes" reflects the trend of rehabilitative care provided more and more often by nursing homes and would involve a visitor beginning visits there and the continuing after the client returns home.
