The Barrow Group
The Barrow Group (recipient of the 1995 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Off-Off Broadway Theatre Company) is a non-profit, resident theatre ensemble of actors, directors, playwrights, and designers based in New York City.
Founded in 1986, The Barrow Group has earned the support of the Billy Rose Foundation, the Greenwall Foundation, the NEA, the NY State Council on the Arts, the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation, and the Shubert Foundation. The Barrow Group has also enrolled the active support of Kathy Bates, Terrence McNally, Lanford Wilson, and Craig Lucas among others.
Throughout the year, the company produces two plays and a number of public readings and workshops. The ensemble members meet weekly to rehearse, read and develop new material in conjunction with playwrights.
The Barrow Group also conducts the following programs:
- Theatre Outreach Program for Students (T.O.P.S.)
> TOPS is an educational outreach program in which Barrow Group members conduct workshops for disadvantaged youth in alternative high schools and present shows free of charge to young people who can't afford tickets.
- A Play Development Program and Reading Series
In this program, playwrights are commissioned to write plays for/or with the company, and play readings are given publicly. This provides a forum for work in progress to be presented to audiences for evaluation before going into production.
- The Barrow Group School and Professional Workshops
The Barrow Group offers classes for actors and directors integrating Barrow Group techniques. Classes are offered in acting, directing, and clown.
