Our objectives are in line with its goals to help address not just surface level issues, but underlying issues in problems of poverty that our communities face. Therefore The Butterfly Program's objectives are to offer services in three categories; referrals, networking and mentoring service to impact our community and individuals that desire to change.
Poverty is an important and emotional issue in our country today. Last year, the Census Bureau released its annual report on poverty in the United States declaring that there were 43.6 million Americans that are living in poverty in 2009. Also, nearly one out of four children lives in households that struggle to put food on the table. That's 16.7 million children. The poverty rate in America is at its highest level in fifteen years. This is an issue that's near and dear to my heart because of my experiences growing up and living in poverty. I currently live in Camden, NJ which is considered one of the poorest cities in the country. Camden is a city were two out of every five residents are below the national poverty line and is noted as one most dangers cities in the country to live in.
