WELCOME TO MIGHTY SPECIAL MUSIC MAKERS
Who We Are:
MSMM is a year-round, inclusionary adult music education program wherein
both disabled and non-impaired players learn and perform music in public
performances. Often professional guest performers join the concert.
Most MSMM players have mild to significant disabilities that make it difficult
for them to communicate in conventional ways or to learn to read music. MSMM
gives them the opportunity to express themselves in the universally understood
language of music; MSMM employs unconventional teaching techniques that enhance
cognitive, social and motor skills. Many of our players do not have
access to other therapies that address their continual need for cognitive
and physical development. Our Music: MSMM bands play a wide repertoire of
music including: classical, jazz, Broadway, folk, light and grand opera,
and more. All band members learn to play professional percussion, tonal and
folk instruments from around the world.
Who can join MSMM?
Adults ages 18 and over, with or without handicaps, are welcome. Minimum
requirements for participation are the ability to:
1. Count to 10(expressively or receptively);
2. Understand and follow the verbal and gestural cues of the conductor;
3. Produce sound from an instrument (i.e. blow, strike, shake, etc.);
4. Regulate behavior during rehearsals and concert performances.
Currently we have adult music performers with the following disabilities:
mental retardation, cerebral palsy, various physical impairments, Down Syndrome,
William's Syndrome, neurological disorders, stroke, traumatic brain injury,
visual impairments, cognitive disabilities, dyslexia, multiple sclerosis,
muscular dystrophy, and/or mild to severe learning disabilities. Musically
educated non impaired volunteers (ages 16 and over) assist individuals when
necessary and play alongside our players. MSMM is approved for community
service learning credits.
Where are MSMM bands?
Currently there are four MSMM bands in Montgomery County, Maryland:
the Potomac Band (Potomac, Bethesda, Gaithersburg), the Inwood Band (Wheaton/
Kensington), the Centers Band (Silver Spring), and the RecPlayers (countywide
with rehearsals in Wheaton).
We are very interested in expanding our program in the Washington, D.C.
metropolitan area and beyond. We encourage persons interested in starting
a band in their area to contact us.
Rehearsals and Performances:
Each band meets weekly for a 90 minute rehearsal. Concerts are held three
to four times each year, with one gala benefit performance each fall. Benefits
to our players and the community: MSMM allows impaired players to participate
in a low cost, age appropriate, socially rewarding arts program that improves
their attention to tasks, motor abilities, and social skills. Family members
take pride in seeing their loved ones as contributing members of the community.
Volunteers gain a spirit of altruism and self-discipline. MSMM free concerts
re-educate the wider community as to just who can make music with dignity
and grace.
