Holler to the HoodFrom the Holler to the Hood is a multi-media project established in 2000 by Appalshop artists in response to concerns about the rising number of prisons being built in central Appalachia, and the cultural tensions among the number of urban prisoners, the majority of whom are people of color, transferred into this predominantly white, rural area. The project uses community-based arts to broaden awareness of economic development decisions in our region, and to question the growth of the prison system in the United States. Through a community arts exchange, it seeks to foster networks between urban and rural grassroots groups by creating cultural works. Visit the Holler to the Hood web site. |
