Ugenya Youth and Community Development Project (UYCDP) is a non-political, non religious and non-profit making Community Based Organization established in 2007 to initiate, support and implement local youth and community development projects in under served rural Kenya.
VISION:
To see a community without extreme poverty, where ALL members live healthy, self reliant lives in a clean and peaceful environment, and where their essential needs necessary for dignified living are met through sustainable social, cultural and economic activities. UYCDP is dedicated to bringing positive socioeconomic change to the underprivileged communities in Kenya by supporting local initiatives and promoting self-reliance. UYCDP projects focuses on promotion of good agricultural practices, education, health, natural resources management practices, culture/arts, economic empowerment, ICT, clean water and sanitation.
International Volunteer Opportunities:
UYCDP offers various opportunities for international volunteers in the areas of education, health, agriculture, water and sanitation, environment, HIV/AIDS work and projects working with children, youth, women in the community. There are no particular qualifications desired for most of the opportunities, only open mind and willingness to learn a new culture, share your knowledge and experience.
The following opportunities are available:
- Working at UYCDP Centre with Children
The volunteer will be working with children between 3-6 years of age in pre-school day care centre run by UYCDP. The placement in quite open and does not necessarily need special skills to volunteer. This opportunity involves day-to day care of the kids, creative play and learning activities, bathing, artwork etc.
- Volunteer in a local Health Centre
This placement is a government-run community health centre based in the village location and serves a community of well over 8000. The area is a malaria zone and therefore most of the children and pregnant women are more vulnerable to malaria attack. The health facility has inadequate staff in comparison to the population it serves. The staff is overwhelmed by the number of staff they handle every day. Background and interests in medical field is desired but a general willingness is essential. The volunteers would assist in serving in-patient meals, taking children's weight, and registering out patients. They would also help move patients in wheel-chairs to designated departments among other things.
- HIV/AIDS & Health Educator Program
This is an opportunity for volunteers interested in working in the AIDS field, from prevention, care to support. Opportunities include developing and documenting orphaned children's profiles, conducting outreach campaigns related to community mobilization, sensitization and health education, supporting initiatives such as distribution of mosquito nets, supporting the training and field work of peer educators as well as assisting families affected by HIV/AIDS with their daily chores.
- General Community Volunteering
This is another worthwhile opportunity to the volunteers due to the nature of direct involvement with the local poor community and working towards addressing the challenges they face in their daily living. The volunteers are free to initiate any activity within this program that will gear towards improving the quality of life of the community and also the effectiveness of the placement.
This organization has informed us they are qualified under their local country tax law to receive tax deductible contributions.
