VOICE --- Voluntary Organisation In Community EnterpriseThe potential of every child is limited only by the education, love, and opportunities they receive. Attempting to reform street children by confining them to remand homes is a lost cause - so instead of them coming to us, we've decided to go to them. We help street children by reaching out to those working at railway stations. Started in 1991 as a registered public trust by the husband-wife team of Victor and Rajashri Bansiwar, VOICE is a voluntary organisation which works for the welfare of street children by educating them. We reach out to the shoe-shine boys, the rag- pickers, coolies, flower-sellers, sweepers, and beggars; aiming to mould them into responsible, integrated citizens. And by delaying their entry into the labour force and acquiring schooling, these children can become healthier, more productive, and earn more - and can thereby be better able to control their lives. A dedicated staff , along with the Bansiwars, hold classes on the platforms of Vile Parle, Andheri, Dadar, and Bandra railway stations in Mumbai, and at the Pump House in Andheri East. In fact, older children who have benefited from VOICE's projects often return to the platforms to help teach the younger ones. 60% of the children in VOICE are girls. This is a surprising and rare fact, since girl children rarely last on the streets - they are forced into prostitution almost immediately at puberty. Visit the VOICE web site. |
