Tami Nadu Open University - LRC
Establishment of TNOU -
The Tamil Nadu Open University was established by an Act (No.27 of 2002) of the Legislative Assembly of the Government of Tamil Nadu to benefit those who have been deprived of and/or denied the access to higher education especially destitute, physically challenged, working men and women, economically weaker sections of the society, and those who discontinued education for various reasons, etc. In the main, it aims to reach the hitherto unreached. The University offers many Programmes in various disciplines.
The Distance Education Council, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) paid rich tributes to the Government of Tamil Nadu for having established TNOU thus:
Given the geographical extent, population and actual need of Tamil Nadu, the setting up of Tamil Nadu Open University by the Government of Tamil Nadu is the right step. We appreciate the Government of Tamil Nadu for having taken this bold and knowledgeable step. This step of the Government of Tamil Nadu shall prove a boon for women, physically challenged, rural poor and marginalised sections of the society and we are committed to support it academically as well as financially. In a short period of six months, Tamil Nadu Open University has done a remarkable work. The University, we understand has initiated steps for recruitment and the announcement of programmes, both of which would not have been possible without considerable ground work and are really commendable. We are sure the action of Government of Tamil Nadu will help us increase enrolments and move towards the targets of 10th Plan." More

Bachelor’s Degree Programme is through two means; the formal scheme and the non-formal scheme. The non-formal scheme is through BPP and the formal scheme is after passing 10+2 or its equivalent examination. The Bachelor’s Programme under formal scheme and non-formal scheme of the University leading to BA / B.Com / BBA / BTS / BCA / B.Sc. Degree can be completed in a minimum period of three years and a maximum period of eight years. Medium of instruction is both English and Tamil but BCA/BTS are offered only in English.
Non-Formal Scheme:
Those learners who have no formal education (i.e., Non 10+2 learners) but have completed 18 years of age may pursue BA/B.Com/BBA/BCA/BTS/B.Sc. Programme through Non-formal scheme. The learners will concurrently do Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP) along with BA/B.Com/ BBA/BCA/BTS/B.Sc.
In BPP - Three Courses are being offered, i.e. PSS-1, PCO-1 and PMT-1.
§ B.A/B.Lit. and BTS students have to study PSS-1
§ BBA and B.Com. students have to study PCO-1 and
§ BCA and B.Sc Students have to study PMT-1
Formal Scheme (10 + 2 passed students):
Those who have passed 10+2 are eligible for direct admission to Bachelors’ Degree Programmes and they need not undergo BPP. A learner will be eligible to get a BA / B.Com / BBA / BCA / BTS / B.Sc Degree when she / he completes the two categories of prescribed courses - Language Courses (Foundation Courses) and Elective and Allied Courses.
Language Courses:
- All 1st year BA / B.Com. / BBA / B.Sc./BTS students must take a 6-credit English Language Course (BFEG - 11) and any one of the following 6-credit Language Courses:
§ Tamil BFTM - 11
§ Telugu BFTG - 11
§ Malayalam BFML - 11
§ Kannada BFKD - 11
§ Hindi BFHD - 11
§ Urdu BFUR - 11
§ French BFFR - 11
- All 2nd year BA/B.Sc. students must take a 6-credit English Language Course (BFEG - 21) and any one of the following 6-credit Language Courses:
§ Tamil BFTM - 21
§ Telugu BFTG - 21
§ Malayalam BFML - 21
§ Kannada BFKD - 21
§ Hindi BFHD - 21
