Dr. Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital started in one room in the walled city of Delhi in 1914. by Dr S. P. Shroff, a young graduate of the Royal college of Surgeons, Edinburgh, who decided to establish an eye care clinic for the poor patients. Looking at the overwhelming response of the number of patients seeking treatment, the idea of starting a charity eye hospital unfolded itself. The British administration allotted land for the hospital where it stands today. Today the hospital is run by a Trust, keeping in mind the vision of the Founder to treat all the patients with equal care, irrespective of their economic backgrounds.
Today, the hospital is committed to do 50 % of the work free of charge for the underprivileged section of the society. The last year's (2005-2006) performance was; total patients seen: 116062; total surgeries done: 6081; Free surgeries done: 3175 (52.2 %).
Community outreach department and it's activities form the core areas of the hospital. The objective of this department is to reach out to the poor people who cannot reach us and continue to live in a state of needless blindness.To meet the financial logistics of reaching out to the poor in slums of Delhi and rural hinterlands of Rajasthan,Uttar Pradesh & Haryana, SCEH has partnered with some international & national level NGO 's and organizations like ORBIS International, Mc Donald's house of Charities, Vision 2020, Combat Blindness Foundation, Unnati Foundation, Helpage, Rotary Clubs and well meaning Individuals.With the help of these donors the hospital could take on many focussed community outreach projects, camps and programs.
The hospital is very quality conscious and continually striving towards excellence vis-a-vis towards practice of Ophthalmology. Today it is the only hospital which has a separate Pediatric Ophthalmology department. The other sub specialities of the hospital are the Cornea and Lasik Clinic, Glaucoma clinic, Vitreo-Retina department, Occuloplasty department, Vision Rehabilitation & Enhancement centre and Contact lens clinic.The hospital is also a registered Eye Bank with the government of India.
The hospital is also a training centre and offers Fellowship program in comprehensive Ophthalmology, Pediatric Ophthalmology, IOL Training, Phaco training and many other para-medical courses too. The future aspiration of the hospital is to become the best tertiary level eye care hospital in the whole of North India and expand it's charity work to other states bordering Delhi.
