Sadhana Village
Sadhana Village is engaged in an innovative effort at care and rehab of mentally challenged adults in India. It has established a residential care Centre in a valley and has been integrating the life at the Centre with the life and activities of around 3500 ex tribal families in the valley.The adults with special needs live in a community of loving house parents and coworkers with an assured quality of life. They have work to do, good and nourishing food and health care. They enjoy festivals and present cultural activities.
Appropriate interventions like watershed development, irrigation schemes, agri and horti development, dairying and credit groups have been initiated to integrate the interests of the families around. They mix with the persons at the centre, invite them to their family festivals, attend at the Cultural shows presented by the Special Persons.
The results have been very encouraging so far. Some of the Special Persons who came with violent tempers have calmed down to acceptable levels. there is a fine sense of community feeling among the residents of this intentional community.
Owing to Sadhana interventions, more than 550 women from the surrounding families have been trained in economic activities;25 savings and credit groups have been flourishing among women in the valley. Milch animals have been bought and loans repaid. Awareness of their social ills among the rural folks has been enhanced.
After studying the wholesome effect of this community integrational process, the Rotary Int`l has assisted Sadhana with machinery and equipment to start a craft shop, a rice mill and a milk chilling plant.
We need more support in marketing the products of our craft shop which produces woollen garments like shawls, comforters, sweaters, etc. and embroidered goods like kerchiefs and other bed and table linen.
