Brief History of Institution and its Objects and Activities

Devoted to impact oriented social service projects the Institute of Integrated Development was recognized and organized as registered society in January 1986 and was inaugurated on 28 October 1984. The membership was a small but of a spiritual nature and devoted band of workers with clear vision of their objectives and the mission ahead. Rather than spreading the service activities at large number of places, the institute selected a few well defined area with their felt and unfelt needs properly identified through preliminary survey and existing data.

The present director of the institute, Dr. Ashok Dhabekar, being a resident of Umred in district of Nagpur with his schooling done there in Jeevan Vikas Vidhyalaya Umred and his stay in Ramkrishna Ashram Nagpur during college education was a natural choice for such work and so many slums, under developed localities in Nagpur such as Adiwasinagar, Nandanvan, Nagsenvan, Vinoba Bhave Nagar and rural villages like Malewada, Pahmi, Chichala, Mangrud, Botezari etc.

Preliminary surveys were conducted to identify family, social, cultural, educational, economic and health characteristics as baseline data. On systematic assessment of these survey data fallowing objectives were decided.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES :
  1. To identify socio economic, educational, cultural and health requirements of the target group population and to introduce intervention to bring overall development in these areas on a sustainable basis.
  2. To make women economically self reliant, employment and income generation activities and to support self employment activities of the needy families in the area.
  3. To give humanitarian relief and services to people in need.
  4. To promote primary health care.
  5. To promote environmental awareness and conservation
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES :
  1. Preliminary surveys to assess requirement for development in these area.
  2. To identify specially vulnerable groups such as physically handicapped, deaf & dumb, visually handicapped, mental handicap, leprosy affected, economic backward, social destitute, widow and unemployed etc.
  3. Identification of neonates, infants, preschool, toddlers, school children, pregnant & lactating mothers and women in their reproductive age group with their felt and unfelt needs.
  4. Assessment of their health, nutrition and immunization status.
  5. Identification of felt and unfelt needs of these areas.
  6. Identification of points and instruments of intervention for upliftment of these areas.
  7. Assessment of social, cultural, economic and educational needs.
  8. Continuous monitoring, assessment and evaluation of the development process.
Soon after the preliminary survey and work started, the activities of this institute attracted wide attention not only from various deprived localities in Nagpur but also many villages around Nagpur,Chandrapur and Gadchiroli in eastern Vidarbha and the requests started pouring in far from and wide to carry out similar work there. As and when the necessary skilled manpower was available such activities were undertaken in most of these areas with gratifying results.

ACTIVITIES OF ORGANIZATION :
  1. Training of workers.

    As per the objectives cited above compact band of train workers conducting surveys and assessment of requirement and areas of the intervention was considered necessary. To build the capacity, to improve quality of service and to improve skill hundreds of workers were trained and sent to acquire training in this respect in the institutions in the country where it is available. Staff, workers and volunteers had undergone training in VHAI, PFI, PRIA, CORT, UNICEF, International Youth Center, National Youth Project, Arbindo Ashram, Development Alternative, HUDCO, Amarjyoti Trust, VANI New Delhi, CBR Forum Bangalore, CHETNA Ahemedabad, LSPSS Coimbatore, ADS Kasjeli, BAIF & SOSVA Pune, Helpage India & Mandalik Trust Mumbai, NRSA & Saraswati Devi Eye Institute Hyderabad, Athest center Vijayvada, GPC, IMA, NOGS, Indian Institute of Youth Welfare Nagpur and many state & central Govt.& other reputed organization’s programs organized through out the country

  2. Services to disabled.

    Identification of physically handicaps, deaf & dumb, blind and mentally retarded as was done from preliminary survey, enable us to prepare complete list of such groups and the activities such as camps for disabled for diagnosis, therapeutic assistance, assessment of disability and planning for their total correction by way of suitable & appropriate appliances, physiotherapy, surgical interventions etc. in Umred, Gadchiroli, Bhisi in collaboration and support from Mangalam, Amarjyoti Trust, All India Federation of deaf New Delhi, and dept. of social welfare Govt. of Maharashtra. Painting contest, athletes meet, distribution of cloths, sweets & crackers etc were organized for them and concerted efforts for the organization of the educational, socio economical rehabilitation (CBR) programs for these groups were taken in many areas.

  3. Health Services.

    This has been the most major area of survey and intervention for the institute and innumerable number of diagnostic, therapeutic, immunization, MCH, eye care(cataract operation, school eye screening, eye donation), leprosy, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, dental, nutritional, school health, occupational health, family welfare, health education and awareness camps were organized not only in many slums and deprived areas of the Nagpur but also in the large number of rural, tribal and remote areas in the districts of eastern Vidarbha in state of Maharashtra.

    Dr. Kotnis Health Service Center was established in Nagsenvan slum of south Nagpur in April 1986 and Dr Bhau Daji Health Service Center was established in August 1994 at Umred town in district of Nagpur, These health centers were adequately staffed, appreciated by the people, press and electronic media from time to time and serves as main centers of activities of health and family welfare, immunization, cancer detection, cataract operation, tuberculosis and various National Health Programs, of the institution on a way to the establishment of its permanent and diversified institutional infrastructure.

  4. Youth Welfare.

    Essay contest, carrier building camps, social service orientation training camps and other activities were organized not only for the welfare of youth but also for the induction of youth in these activities for their all round and overall integrated development. Many youths were sent for the various youth activities in Bangalore, New Delhi, Darjeeling, Jaiunder, Nainital, Bhubneshwar, Gwalior, Patna, Ahemedabad, Madurai, Hyderabad, Vijaywada, Wardha, Mumbai and Pune etc.

  5. Rural Development.

    Rural Development centers were established in Malewada, Pahmi, Chichala, Mangrud and Botezari villages in Bhiwapur block in district of Nagpur in September 1993, to plan, supervise and monitor the rural development programs as envisaged in the objectives of the organization.

  6. Women and Child Development.

    To bring improvement in the health, nutritional, educational, economic, social and overall development of women and children, the concerted efforts were made to identify the vulnerable groups. Activities for the educational, vocational and health training services were organized for them. Self employment income generation activities in collaboration with various govt. and voluntary organizations is currently in progress.

    Child Development center Nagsenvan in North Nagpur, Wanjara village and Jogithana peth Umred were established for providing non-formal education, immunization, nutritional services, family welfare services, care in illness services to the beneficiary groups of these centers.

  7. Environment promotion and conservation.

    The institute involved in the environmental protection and ecological conservation, awareness through the media of youth, women, school children and teachers. Activities like seminar, training course, camps, padyatra, public meetings, painting & poster contest, elocution contest have been organized for the public awareness and education. Nurseries have been raised to involve the people in tree plantation and kitchen gardening. Medicinal plant garden are also raised in various places to use local medicinal flora for the curative, preventive & promotive health needs of the people. Medicinal plants workshops have been organized at several places for traditional practitioners.

  8. Blindness control project.

    In this area hundreds of cataract camp have been organized for which institution has been awarded several times by district collector and divisional commissioners. School eye screening programs have been organized in several schools and thousands of spectacles were give to the students having low vision. Surveys for screening of blinds in the community in slums & rural areas, eye care trainings, workshops, poster contest etc. have also been organized. Three squint operation camps have also been organized for the correction of squint.
VISION IN FUTURE :

The institute is not contained to the achievement made so far, of the results they have made in the area of development as narrated above in all modesty, the institute would like to expand its activities, programs & projects in more and more such areas in many other localities. Number of such proposals are already under consideration and with due regard to the skilled manpower available to the institute, expansion programs and projects would be undertaken gradually.
