- Aims and objects of the projects:
- To create awareness among the commercial sex workers about their under development.
- To save them from HIV/AIDS and other sexual transmitted diseases.
- To improve the economic status and save them from the hunger and deaths.
- To improve the leadership qualities, self-confidence and self-respect.
- To eradicate traditional customs, taboos and superstitious beliefs.
- To start day care centers and provide nutritious food to their children.
- To provide immunization to all children.
- To improve creativity and the skills among the children.
- To prepare them for pre-primary education and to reduce child labor.
- Brief history about the project implementing agency:
CYSO is a voluntary organization registered under the societies registration Act XXI of 1860 bearing the registration Number 28/1994 with a group of like-minded group in order to work for the betterment of destitute women, street children, orphans and commercial sex workers.
- Brief description about the Mandal:
The proposed project will be implemented in Mangalagiri Mandal of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh. The proposed Mandal is situated on NH-5 towards Vijayawada.According to 2001 census, the total population of the Mandal is 85,000, out of which, scheduled castes (dalits) are 60%, the rest of the people belonging to the other communities.
It is one of the richest places of AP. River Krishna is the main source of irrigation in this area. People are raising crops such as, paddy, turmeric, banana, vegetables are the main crops of this Mandal. The nature of the soil is black cotton and sandy looms. Transporting, communication and other facilities have to be improved. Sri Laxmi Narasimha Swamy Temple is one of the most famous tourist places in this Mandal. The king Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri naidu constructed in16th century.
There was an interesting story to construct this temple. In those days, there were some tribal communities professionally dacoits. So that they were suddenly attacking on villages and plundering to the villages, killing and taking away all the things from the people. It becomes a great problem to the king of Mangalagiri. In order to solve this problem, the king was prepared a plan. He invited these dacoits and requested their cooperation to construct the temple.
Basing on the request of the king, more than 30,000 tribal dacoits participated and completed the construction. The last day, the king was arranged the dinner for the tribes in the palace and killed them brutally. But the guard was not happy in this regard. He was advised the king to give main worship to the tribal community. Since then, this process has been continuing in this temple.
- Socio-economic condition of the target group:
The target group is belongs to DOMMARA community. They are socially untouchables and living outside of the main villages of the slums without basic facilities. Professionally, they are dancers at the temples in olden days. Gradually, they become sexual toys in the society. Consequently, they become lowest persons in the society.
The rich and wealthy people are fulfilling their lust. So that, they permanently becomes as commercial sex workers in the modern society.
Economically, they are very poor and landless. Their main assets are, they are beautiful and having talents to attract the males. The government has initiated various types of developmental activities for the prosperity and livelihood of their children. Government tried to implement the developmental activities through mediators and other various so-called social workers, but not yet reached to this unfortunate section of the society. So that, they are trailing behind the other communities of the society.
Due to poverty and exploitation, 90% of the target group become illiterates, become as domestic servants and commercial sex workers. 60-70% of their children discontinued their studies and become as domestic servants, working in hotels, lodges, wine shops and rearing pigs and cattle.
Regarding their mothers, 50% of women suffering from HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. These people and their children living in most sympathetic and miserable conditions of the society. Every day, they are suffering mentally and physically in the society.
- Need of the project:
There was an adage that was women would be honored those, countries or places or families will be prosperous. But, in fact, it is not applicable for all communities of women. The target group belonging to the gypsy tribal community. Due to the traditional customs and upper caste exploitation, this community became as dancers and street acrobats in the temples and festive occasions. Eventually they become sexual toys in the hands of rich and elite for a morsel of food. Gradually, the traditional system of exploitation had been changed and their remuneration had been stopped suddenly after the independence by the government, so that their professions and livelihood has been reduces.
Consequently, this community lost their income and facing problems to maintain their families. In order to over come from this problem and to maintain their families, they are continuing in the flesh trade in and around their surroundings.
Through this profession, they are maintaining their families with low esteem and humiliation. Unfortunately, it is known to esteemed organization that, HIV/AIDS become a course to them. So, their business has been collapsed totally. Consequently, they are not in a position to maintain their families and not in a position to cure their sexual transmitted diseases.
The people are suffering from hunger and diseases. The society is also not showing affection, mercy, love and honor on this unfortunate and vulnerable group. This community is being treating as untouchables and social evils. Thus, civilized and educated persons socially boycotted them. Consequently, they are living out side of the main villages in small huts with out basic facilities. 60-70% of the children discontinued their primary education due to poverty. These ignored and delicate children facing mental and physical torture by their masters and their day today life.
In order to avert this problem and improve the social economic education and status of these victims. CYSO executive body has conducted door to door survey and prepared a documentation on their present living conditions decided to take up a rehabilitation and day care centers for the prosperity and development of these unfortunate people.
