CECOWOR’s Mission statement
“Create an enabling environment for the liberation and development of marginalized people like women, children low caste and other rural poor. Encourage maximum people’s participation so that they have better control over their life and enjoy the benefits of combined strength and spirit”.
Programs focus:
- Promotion of literacy, basic education and General knowledge.
- Child rights promotion and Prevention of child abuse in any form.
- Develop life skills, livelihood opportunities and self help self reliance.
Women development Programme:
Backed by the Tamil Nadu Women’s Development Corporation, we are supporting the formation and strengthening of women’s self-help groups in three blocks of Gingee Taluk for women below the poverty line. Revolving funds are being facilitated and economic activities like vegetable cultivation, bricks making and fruits growing are being promoted. In support of this, with Government backing, we are providing various training including enterprise development skills training for women from the self-help groups. Women empowerment to participate in their development is our focus here.
Children education programme:
- In order to give education to the socially and economically excluded children of poor widows we are running children home for male and female children. We are shelter, food, school uniforms, note books and stationery, and schooling to these children.
- One time educational support to the widows’ children to buy books, uniform, school bags, stationery and school fee.
- Informal education centre for the dropouts and school going children from villages to provide them supplementary education, develop self confidence, leadership skills and General knowledge.
- We are also running sponsorship programme for the poor children to support their education.
Gypsy education and advocacy programme:
- Crèches for the children below 5 years. Besides other activities, teaching alphabets and numbers are part of the crèche activities. Educational materials, like slates, and play materials are supplied and daily nutritional snacks given. These crèches also turn out to motivational centre for nurturing the habit of schooling.
- Extra tuition for the school going children. Books, stationery items, school bag and school uniforms have been supplied to them.
- We provide educational aids, notebooks, school uniform, and school bags to schools going children from Gypsy community and secluded Tribes.
- Continues motivation and counseling good number children got enrolled and dropouts re-enrolled into schools.
- Advocacy for Gypsies for better access to basic necessities and a better deal generally.
- Human rights and education support to tribal groups.
Awareness/Access to rights/Economic Betterment:
There will be meetings to raise community awareness, particularly on human rights issues and the long term value of education. Advocacy skills for the tribals will also be promoted so that they can get better access to the various government schemes and support programmes. Other economic development initiatives will be also be promoted but particularly initiatives like this which promote the tribals natural skills and abilities, such as snake and rat catching. (Tribals eat rats, so it’s also food for free!)
Educational Support:
Education is seen as the key to long term change. So after raising adult awareness, 4 village based centres will be set up to provide educational support by means of: a) Pre-school nurseries; b) remedial education for dropouts and adult basic literacy classes; c) Homework clubs. School bags and educational supplies will be given out and educational trips undertaken
Human rights programme:
Organizing public contact programmes to create awareness on the rights and ways to defend them with special focus on women and children rights. Counseling to resolve the family problems and action to involve communities to defend their rights in situations of violation. This also includes introducing them to local officials, including magistrates, police and lawyers. We are training and forming human rights protection council at the Taluk level of representatives from all the villages.
Skill training programme:
- Training on dress making and embroidery are running in the villages. 23 girls out of the trainee from the last year were facilitated with bank loans to buy machines and now they have started their small shops and started earning income.
- T.V., Radio and simple home appliances mechanism training for the unemployed youth
Free eye camp:
Organizing in all the three blocks in cooperation with the Aravind eye hospital Pondicherry and the district association for the prevention of blindness.
Capacity building of local voluntary organizations:
Playing the role of Facilitator and moderator for NGO network.
Promoting Volunteers and cross-cultural exchange:
Understanding and appreciation of the diversified culture around the path for peaceful coexistence of human beings with nature. We believe that by understanding and appreciating global differences, we can all develop and grow. We are run cultural exchange camps, involving Indians and people from overseas. These give participants an opportunity to experience Indian life at the grass roots level and to share their own experiences, while making a contribution to our community. Where there is a match in skills we also work with individuals who help us in our organization work. We strive for:
- Strengthening civil society, capacity building and advocacy for participative democracy, good governance, human rights promotions and poverty alleviation
- Work for quality of life among Dalits, tribals and other marginalized groups like Gypsies, Washer men, Bamboo basket weavers, Potters, quarry workers, migrant workers etc. with special focus on women and children.
- Capacity building of target groups on ICT and motivation for maximum utilization of ICT for the human rights promotion and poverty alleviation.
- Cross cutting issues are Gender equality, cultural understanding, environmental protection, Sustainable changes.
