Arunodaya Poirada
Arunodaya Poirada has done very extensive work in providing health services to very remote villages in Bellary district, one of Karnataka's very backward districts. Mary Mathew, who is the Secretary of the NGO, is now also the Secretary of Fevord-K (Federation of Voluntary Organisations-Karnataka), and is thus a keen networker on health and related issues.
Dr. Ajay Kumar, a Psychiatrist and President of Poirada, has been keenly involved in setting up the NGO's mental health extension services, particularly in villages where the concept does not exist. He is presently keen on establishing a systematic intervention in preventive mental health care, but there has been very little support for this from the State. The problem is serious indeed, particularly given the high rates of drug addiction that is prevalent in the region, particularly because of Hampi, a UNESCO Heritage destination, and high on the map of back-pack tourists.
There is a comprehensive need to address this problem, and POIRADA intends to do this. They have been looking for long-term support in this regard.
