What is ARCOD?
ARCOD is a grass root voluntary Organization registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act 27 of 1975. ARCOD was established during January 1988 at Rayakottai, Krishnagiri District (formerly Dharmapuri District). Later on ARCOD extended its activities in the neighboring districts. At present
ARCOD is working in the following Districts of Tamilnadu:
- Krishnagiri
- Thiruvannamalai
- Thiruppur
- The Nilgris
- Thirunelveli
Vision
The vision of ARCOD is a social, economical, political and health empowerment of Rural Poor, Dalits, Adivasis, Marginal and Small Farmers Women and Children in its operational areas.
Mission
To establish human resources with necessary attitudes, knowledge and skill within ARCOD and among the marginalized communities to facilitate emanation of collective leadership for socio economic and political empowerment
To improve the standard of living of marginalized families in its operational areas through sustainable development activities like Micro Finance, Collective Enterprises, Education, Health and other development Activities
Activities in the past and achievements
ARCOD has undertaken various developmental activities in the past. Some of them are listed below:
- Waste Land Development Project
- Orientation to Farmers on Organic Forming
- Formation of Cluster level Women Federations (2000)
- Reproductive and Child Health (2001 - 2004)
- Facilitation of State Level Micro Credit Network(2003 - 2008)
- Family Counselling Center (2000 - 2005
- Facilitation of Women's Leadership in Panchayath Raj (2006 - 2009)
- Youth Development Project (2006 - 2009)
What we do now?
- Skill Development Trainings
The present day need for employment opportunities for the younger generation was felt and possible avenues were taken up by ARCOD. It was found that a large population of the youth in rural areas was lacking quality education and employable skills. In order to provide skills and encourage self employment ARCOD in association with Hand in Hand and also NABARD conducted two Mobile service training in Rayakottai and Chengam and three Beautician skill trainings at Krishnagiri, Shoolagiri and Chengam. Altogether 120 trainees were benefited by these skill trainings. A Tailoring and Garment making training was conducted in Kangeyam for 30 SHG women towards providing better employment generation opportunities.
- Community - Driven STD / HIV / AIDS Prevention Program
The project was initiated in the year 2004. STD / HIV / AIDS prevention program is successfully implemented in Krishnagiri, Kaveripattinam, Uthangarai , Barugur, Veppanapalli, Kelamangalam and Mathur blocks of Krishnagiri district. The project is aimed at identifying the Female Commercial Sex Workers and to make them to seek health behaviour. At present, 2049 Commercial sex workers are under the care of the project.
- Fair -Trade Tea Estate Workers Welfare Program
ARCOD works with the workers of Tea Estates who are cultivating organic tea. The following activities are carried out under the program for the welfare of the workers and their children.
- Assistance for emergency expenses such as medical and funeral expenses
- Typhoid Vaccine to the workers
- Assistance for Income Generation Activities
- Providing LPG cylinder with stove to the workers family
- Lunch containers & Sweaters to workers
- Housing Deposit Scheme
- Construction and Repair of School Buildings
- Construction of Rest sheds for workers
- The following assistances extended to the to children of workers
- Educational Scholarships for higher studies
- Computers & Computer Education
- School Uniforms
- School Teacher's Salary
- Furniture for School
- Context Specific Quality Education for Children of Linguistic Minorities
The Hosur division is multilingual; the population is predominantly Telugu and Kannada speaking. ARCOD identified the need for improvement in the system of education for Linguistic minorities, as a result of a study taken to analyze the present status of children educated in Telugu and Kannada medium. ARCOD started working towards this since May 2009. ARCOD plans to carry out various activities to ensure quality education to these linguistic minority Children.
- Youth Development
Youth development will be the major area of focus in the next decade for ARCOD. It is aimed to take up planned interventions for holistic development of Youth. The activities will focus on improving education, imparting life skills, skill development, career guidance, promoting micro enterprises and self employment, health etc.
