Amews (Andhra Medical Educational and Welfare Services)Mr. P. Sunder, a renowned person, Zoologist and Paraitolgist and a Senior Social Worker, started AMEWS (Andhra Medical Educational and Welfare Services) in the year 1995. We evinced keen interest in the causes of the unfortunate - Leprosy, TB, HIV patients and physically handicapped persons besides development activities. AMEWS-Aids is a registered Govt. of AP, voluntary organization providing services to HIV/AIDS physically handicapped and doing a number of other development activities in East Godavari and Guntur Dist. (AP, South India) for the last 10 years. We cured leprosy patients, worked for child labour eradication, awareness of STD (Sexually Transmitted disease), HIV/AIDS and training on communicable diseases. In India, Andhra Pradesh experiences the second highest HIV prevalence after Maharastra. HIV rates have also spread from high risk groups to the wider community increasing the number of people living with HIV/AIDS(PLHA). A study conducted amongst female sex workers in May 2000 by FHI/India found 36% tested positive for the first ELISA and 34% for the second ELISA test. The prevalence has been increasing day by day and "The AMEWS" has taken up the challenge with commitment. The efforts and achievements of "AMEWS" include developing and implementing a community home base to care and a support programme in and around Kakinada,Peddapuram(Ap,South India). To date the project was able to out reach to about 120 - 56 infected and 44 affected children and provide:
Information Education and Communication is one of the effective and major components in creating awareness among the masses as well as classes as there is much stigma associated with STD and AIDS. In order to meet the needs, there is the need to transmit the correct and necessary messages through proper communication channels. In India, HIV/AIDS patients were ex-communicated from society. Even in the school children, there are separations. Here Human Rights are less. Even HIV children have lost their human rights. AMEWS is doing a bicycle tour whole over the world as an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign. We recently completed our country tour on several states as part of our HIV/AIDS awareness campaign.
