ACTIVE
Fifty years after independence, India still has the largest number of poor people of any country in the world. Of its 1 Billion inhabitants, about 450 million are below the poverty line, 75 per cent (750 Million) of them in the rural areas. More than 40 per cent of the population is illiterate, with women, tribal and scheduled castes particularly affected.
Khamman District of Andhra Pradesh - a southern state of the country - is inhabited by more than 3 Million people whose monthly income is less than US$ 6.
ACTIVE (Action for Collective Tribal Improvement & Vocational Education), a not for profit development organization, started by a group of social workers in 1987 with livelihood interventions in the remote, interior and poorly endowed tribal hamlets in Khammam.
For the uplift of these under privileged people, living in inhuman conditions under abject poverty, ACTIVE is implementing the following programmes:
- Community Organization,
- Supplementary Education,
- Community Health,
- Eco-restoration and Sustainable Development
- Sustainable Agriculture
- Tribal Self-Reliance,
- Water & Sanitation.
- 3000 families organized into Village Level Sanghams,
- Provided irrigation facilities to more than 5500 acres through the construction of water conservation structures,
- Horticulture gardens promoted in 800 acres,
- Plantations raised in 3500 acres of Waste/Idle lands
- Introduced the concept of saving in the poor families thereby reducing the dependence on the money lenders,
- Enrolling of all the school going children in the primary schools,
- Woman empowerment in the villages,
- Full immunization achieved which resulted in no maternal deaths,
- Various health camps has been organized in the target villages, thereby improving the health condition of the populace.
