The mission statement of St. Gregory, a Catholic co-educational high school, defines the task it has chosen to accomplish: "to provide students of diverse academic, ethnic and religious backgrounds a secure environment in which they can experience quality education that equips them with the skills needed to become contributing members of society and to accomplish this in an atmosphere that encourages respect and fosters human values."

In 1937, St. Gregory opened its doors as the first Catholic, co-ed high school in Chicago. Today the student body of St. Gregory is a microcosm of the city itself, reflecting the diversity that makes Chicago the heartland of the country. In celebrating such diversity, St. Gregory creates an environment of respect and appreciation. For the world of tomorrow we seek to understand the common strands of our shared humanity.

In 1980, we began the Learning Resource Program (LRP) for students challenged by learning disabilities (now about 25% of our student population). For twenty years, St. Gregory has led the way among Chicago high schools by providing such services. Our transfer policy accepts students at any time during the school year upon referral from other schools and agencies. We are also home each year to about 50 students from group homes such as Lawrence Hall, Mercy Home and Maryville. Often these are students who, in any other setting, may have failed or dropped out altogether. The nurturing environment of St. Gregory High School can lead them to graduation and satisfying life choices. Personal attention is the keystone to St. Gregory's success.

At the other end of the academic spectrum are the students who excel and are in need of more challenge. St. Gregory offers them a more challenging curriculum that equips them with the skills required to be accepted at the college of their choice.

As we move into the future, St. Gregory brings from the past time-tested values to build upon a tradition of excellence developed over our 64 year history. We strive to teach justice tempered with love, to model behavior that testifies to the truth of our Catholic faith while honoring the morality of so many others. We have not forgotten the power of the arts to "stir men's souls" nor the ability of sports to rally spirit. We explore and honor our differences whether they be intellectual, spiritual or racial. We even dare to imagine a future forged on mutual respect, responsibility and appreciation that would enable each student to fully take his/her place within the circle of life.

St. Gregory High School is accredited by the State of Illinois, the North Central Association and the National Catholic Education Association. It offers a full academic, college-prep program, a range of extracurricular activities and sports in a non-judgmental atmosphere that encourages the growth of each students to his/her full potential.
