Illinois Self-Help CoalitionThe Illinois Self-Help Coalition coordinates information for 2500 Illinois and national mutual-help groups, and educates, trains and advocates for groups. Self-help/mutual-help groups provides no or low cost volunteer support for 300 different types of problems and health conditions. Grassroots groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Alzheimers' Disease and Mended Hearts have enabled families linked by the same suffering to support each other. One major benefit of mutual-help groups is that people no longer feel alone. Mutual-help groups provide information, support, and convey self-responsibility and a sense of being part of a caring community. The Coalition helps self-help groups understand and sustain the principles of self-help/support groups, develop new groups, and works to integrate groups into health care and communities. It publishes the Insiders' Guide to Self-Help Groups in Illinois. |
