PICTURE THIS ProjectsPICTURE THIS Projects is a Chicago-based, not-for-profit group of volunteer photographers and other community members supporting and creating photography projects that encourage creative expression and self-esteem and help bridge the gap between people of different backgrounds. Our specialty is providing cameras, film and volunteer coaches to work with kids one-on-one and bringing photography to those with little access to the medium. PTP was founded in 1993 by a group of Chicago-area professional photographers. It started as a single project organized to share the power of photography with girls. It went so well that we incorporated. We’ve worked with kids, ages 7 - 19, from the Eisenberg Boys and Girls Club, the McCormick Boys and Girls Club, Marillac House, East Village Youth Programs, Young Chicago Authors and recently Trifels Gymnasium in Annweiler Germany though the "Our World" project. We also support projects organized by other groups. Photographs by some of our kids are on indefinite exhibition at the Community Media Workshop, 623 S. Wabash in Chicago. The kids’ photography has also been exhibited at Gallery 312, the Illinois Art Gallery, ARC gallery, the Harold Washington Library and other neighborhood libraries, plus a number of cafes in the Chicago area. Outside Chicago sites include the Illinois Art Museum in Springfield, IL; the Suburban Fine Art Center in Highland Park, IL; and the Northern Indiana Art Association Gallery in Munster, IN. One of our favorite exhibitions was in Cook County Hospital’s emergency room waiting room. In addition, the work has been exhibited in Canada and Germany, where it received much appreciation from the press and public. Stories about us have appeared in the media worldwide, including: Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Defender, Pioneer Press newspapers, Lerner newspapers, StreetWise, Chicago Reader, The Times newspapers, Waukegan News-Sun, WMAQ-TV, WTTW-TV, WGN-Radio, and Ms magazine, Rangefinder, to name a few. Our projects are made possible through the collaboration and support of numerous individuals and companies. Corporate supporters include Calumet Photographic Supply, Canon, Chicago Foundation for Women, Fuji, Helix, Ilford, The Jocarno Fund, K&S Photographic, Kodak, K&S Photographic, LabOne, Mid-State Camera, Nikon, Pentax, Polaroid, Solaris Photo Lab, Sidley & Austin and numerous others. Sponsors for "Our World" are still being sought. PICTURE THIS Projects is an inclusive group. We invite volunteer photographers and community members to get involved in ways meaningful to them. We are looking for new groups to collaborate with on projects as well as board members with experience in project management, fiscal management, fundraising, public relations.
