Lake Shore Animal ShelterLake Shore Animal Shelter (LSAS) has served Chicago since 1966 as one of the City's first no-kill shelters. LSAS works to reduce the needless killing of pets through adoption programs, spay/neuter promotion, and public education efforts. Last year in the city of Chicago, approximately 40,000 cats and dogs were put to death due to lack of good adopting homes. Solely funded by individual donations, LSAS is an all-volunteer organization. Donations go to the direct care and welfare of the animals. LSAS gives priority to pets who must be given up by their families due to illness, death, disability, financial or other difficulties. LSAS is always interested in making new friends. Some volunteer opportunities we provide include animal socialization, adoption counselor trainee, dog walking, cat grooming, and special event work for our annual fundraiser, "Dog's Night Out", Tag Day, Bookwraps at Barnes & Noble, Saturday pet of the week showing at Barbara's Bookstore on Wells, to name just a few. If you have a special skill (artist, publicist, webmaster, desktop publishing, writer, etc.) you would like to lend to benefit the animals, we would love to hear from you. If you can't spare time, we have a Sponsor's Program. Your participation at various levels of commitment helps provide shelter, food, medical care, and training for the many homeless dogs and cats who find themselves in our care. This program is a lifeline for pets who come to us needing training before they can be deemed adoptable. If you decide to join our program, please ask your employer if they have a charitable matching grant program. See our website for particulars at www.lakeshoreanimalshelter.org, or call 312 409-1162. LSAS's fundraiser, "Dog's Night Out", is the social event of the season for you and your dog! Held at the exquisite and historic Dewes Mansion, 503 W Wrightwood, this year's event is partially sponsored by Whole Foods! Jim Graca, the owner of the property, and his dog Bingo have donated the building for the evening. There is something for everyone: cocktails and hors d'oeuvres to the sounds of a great jazz band, a gourmet doggie buffet, a doggie masseur to soothe jittered nerves, and contests for best dressed, best stupid dog trick, dog/owner look-alike, and top dog as judged by celebrities. This event is the star of the season. With a gourmet buffet dinner, a HBO/Showtime comic headliner, Sonya White, entertaining the crowd, and a live auction for fabulous prizes, it is almost impossible to imagine that all this is included for a minimum donation of $65 per ticket (advance) or $80 minimum donation at the door! Don't miss Dog's Night 2000. Register early if you plan to bring your "best friend(s)" as space is limited to 70 dogs (all terribly well behaved, of course, but in case of too much excitement, the Poop Patrol will be on board).
