Council for Disability RightsFormally incorporated in early 1981 as Chicago's and Illinois' first cross-disability consumer-controlled organization, the Council for Disability Rights remains committed to the empowerment of people with disabilities and their families through information, education, and training that promote self advocacy and independent living skills. Information Services Department responds to information requests by phone, mail, and e-mail; refers consumers for legal service and other assistance; and publishes CDR Reports, our monthly newsletter, and two Housing Reports. Recently a web site was established at www.disabilityrights.org. Job Preparation and Placement Program, funded by the Illinois Department of Rehabilitation Services since 1988, provides their clients job search skills and helps them locate appropriate job openings. About 125 clients are served annually, as many as 50 of whom are placed into lasting jobs. Travel Training Programs for adults and high school youth make mainline public transit a safe and familiar option to dependence on paratransit service. Programs are funded by local transit authorities and Chicago Public Schools. Awareness, Training and Outreach Services, under fee for service contracts, conduct a variety of trainings -- e.g. disability awareness, compliance evaluation, disability rights, special education procedures -- for corporations, professionals, parent groups, consumer organizations, etc..
