Conscience International - CIConscience International (CI) is an independent, non- partisan, non-profit human rights and development NGO working in The Gambia and Sierra Leone. CI has Observer Status with the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights of the African Union (AU). CI works to maximize the knowledge, respect and observance of human rights and to enhance the awareness of human rights and development work through linkages with national, regional and international like-minded entities. The promotional activities of CI stem from Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is one of the bases of CI's mandate i.e. to give meaning and actuality to this article which states that "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." Conscience International (CI) is a recognized NGO registered in conformity with the Laws of The Gambia and Sierra Leone; and has Observer Status with the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights of the African Union (AU). It has membership status with the International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net), Member of The NGO Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC), The Darfur Consortium, a partner to the Special Court in Sierra Leone; and amongst others. The CI is making effort to implement its set objectives in the following areas:
ADVOCACY: Developing effective media linkages, raising awareness of the human rights situations to activists, decision-makers and other stakeholders within The Gambian, Sierra Leone and beyond to ensure better attention and timely action. CAPACITY BUILDING: Equipping CI staff and other human rights activists with skills that enable them to enhance the efficiency of their work and ensure better individual protection through improved personal capacities and familiarity with international human rights norms. HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION: Inform, sensitize and educate the public on internationally recognized human rights through workshops and the use of journals, newsletters, brochure, posters and report. LITIGATION: Article 30 of the African Charter, established the African Commission with the sole mandate to promote, protect and interpret the provision of the African Charter. In its strive to implement the African Charter, CI has instituted several cases before The African Commission on instances of human rights violations on the African continent by member States Parties to the African Charter. PARTNERSHIPS: Promotes information sharing, partnership building and development of expertise at national, regional and international levels for effective human rights advocacy.
