SAINTS(Student Assistance in North Toronto for Seniors)SAINTS is an organization which places high school students to help local senior citizens and disabled (long or short term) adults with the simple home maintenance chores needed to keep up a house or apartment. We celebrated our 20th anniversary in 1998! For a small fee (currently $7.00 per hour, with a one hour minimum) students arrive after school or on weekends, to help with lawn and garden care, snow shovelling, pet care (including walking the dog & changing cat litter boxes!), shopping, and light housework such as vacuuming, dusting and basic cleaning. Students DO NOT tackle work like plumbing, electrical wiring or roof work, and do not provide driving services, but their help is very much appreciated as a supplement to traditional in-home cleaning and nursing services. Both generations benefit--the seniors from seeing a friendly young face, and being able to have their chores done at a reasonable cost. The young workers enjoy the flexibility of an after school job which makes a real contribution to the community and looks good on a resume or school application. In addition, friendships are formed which last long after the initial tasks are completed--so stereotypes of age/youth are broken down on both sides. Family members are pleased to know that the tasks which their elders need to remain in their own homes, are being done--saving their time together for quality visits. |
