St. George's Romania AppealSt. George's Romania Appeal was founded in 1990, with the aim of helping disadvantaged children in Romania. One of the main works was that of providing help to a handicapped home, housing some 90 severely handicapped children. Medical aid was given as well as foodstuffs and clothing, and thence to look at a way of providing long term help. Through discussions with the Romanian Government it was agreed to co-fund the construction of a new home and recuperation center for the children. This would not just become their home, but it would also provide therapy for them and also other children living either in other institutions or at home. Specialist help would be recruited in order to have an exchange of ideas and to train the Romanian staff in techniques used elsewhere in the world. A second work was then commenced, that of helping orphans in the local orphanage. The aim here is to provide a Bakery School so that the orphans would be taught a skill that would enable them to obtain employment when they left the orphanage, and not end up on the street to become street children. In learning they would be providing bread for other children in institutions. This web page will periodically show updates for the most recent
happenings at St. George's Romanian Appeal. The most recent update is

In March a group of Six pediatricians from the Baylor College of Medicine Texas Children's Hospital visited the children in Cezieni in order to asses them and to build up files on the children for long term care. The team led by Professor Mark Kline MD carried out detailed examinations of all the children and provided workshops for the medical assistants who work in the home with the children. Basics were covered such as the need for thorough cleanliness. All the results of the examinations will be kept by the physicians as they will be returning asses how the children are progressing. One major problem that was highlighted was " Trench foot ", caused by feet being continually damp. Fungal infection then sets in. This is an easily remedied problem. The Clinical Nurse who accompanied the doctors in March Nancy Calles, returned to Cezieni in June to see how the children were progressing. We are very pleased to have this association with the group from Texas, and hope for a long and lasting relationship. During the visit in June, a cameraman accompanied us in order to film the work with the children in Cezieni, the new home and recuperation centre and also the Orphans and proposed program for them. As part of the filming we visited Street Children in Bucharest, and a Romanian NPO which is working with them. The children live in the sewers, and obtain money in whatever way they are able. All of them sniff glue in order to take the hunger pangs away. One girl had given birth to three children whilst living in this condition, the last baby dying of congenital syphilis. Many of the Street Children end up as such from Orphanages, as they have no hope or chance of obtaining employment when they finish school. Others come from abusive backgrounds. We saw all ages of children during our visit.
Once the videos have been produced they will be obtainable from us
for whoever may wish to see our work.
