Joshua Tree Tortoise RescueThe Joshua Tree Tortoise Rescue offers refuge, rehabilitation and adoption programs for rescued and special-needs turtles, especially the California Desert Tortoise. We do not collect or raise desert tortoises. We are permitted by the California Department of Fish and Game to assist them in controlling the possession of the endangered desert tortoise. We work closely with the community to education as many persons as possible regarding the importance of preserving these protected species in their natural environment. Since it is illegal to release a captive tortoise into the wild, the Joshua Tree Tortoise Rescue also provides a legal alternative to individuals who have had a desert tortoise rather than releasing it into a healthy wild population.
Once a tortoise is rehabilitated from its sickness or injury, it is
placed for adoption by screening applicants who feel they can give
the tortoise a good home. This is a lifetime commitment, as
tortoise can live up to 100 years old.
