Greater Long Beach Youth Activities League
Greater Long Beach Youth Activities League is a tutoring/mentoring/tackle football organization located in Long Beach, CA. Our participation base consist of economically disadvantaged youth in the Long Beach area. We have a current enrollment in excess of 300 children. Our program is ongoing with an emphasis on tackle football. Our football season starts yearly on July 17. Boys, ages 7-14, participate in tackle football and girls, ages 4-14, are assigned to the Cheerleading program. Our identified "at risk" children are matched with mentors to help guide and counsel through them difficult situations. Our program is an alternative to vandalism, gang and "latch key" situations. We also offer an after school tutoring program to help increase literacy at local schools. Our football program participation is under the auspices of the Universal Sports Conference of Los Angeles County. We teach the fundamentals of football by focusing on teamwork and the advantages of team cooperation as it relates to real life situations. Problem solving alternatives are explored and encouraged. Tutors and mentors are volunteer parents, teachers and professionals. Equipment for our football program is purchased with donations from the public.
There is an enormous amount of cost associated with the purchase of football related equipment. In addition there are insurance cost mandated in association with conference participation. Our participation cost per child is estimated at approximately $300 per month. We are actively soliciting ongoing support in order to continue the work we have started for the betterment of the community and the world as a whole. Our hopes are that every child that passes through our program will be a better adult because of the time they spent with us.
