Freedom in MediaFreedom in Media’s mission is to promote local and community access to media in the bay area and support organizations that further this goal. In this era of corporate dominance of every type of media we pledge to assist to the best of our ability any efforts to bring a non-corporate voice to radio, television, and print media. We will help to bring the issues relevant to the community at large and minority communities to the for on the air and on the page. Our hope is to promote vigorous and detailed public discussion and comment on issues of concern to the public that are underreported or ignored in the main steam media. Freedom in Media will also produce or assist in producing television, radio and print journalism that addresses the concerns outlined above. We support local community based media such as Community Access Television, true Public Radio, Micro-Radio, and local non-corporate journalism. We hope to stimulate public debate on the legitimacy of corporate dominance in all forms of media through our production efforts. A space needs to be made for the voices of those who are not in accord with the needs of the current corporate media structure. This non-profit community assistance organization will attempt to influence decision makers in both the public and private sectors and convince them that community based media is beneficial for not only the marginalized sectors of our community but for our society as a whole. Freedom of speech is one of the most basic of American values and in this technological era the spirit of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution can not be adhered to as long as minority opinion’s continue to be denied access to all but the most tiny sector of the media. It is precisely these minority opinions that the First Amendment is designed to protect. It is just as clear a violation of the Constitution to not allow people a place to voice their opinions as it is to not let them speak at all. The current climate is not only unacceptable but clearly criminal as it violates the U.S. Constitution. Freedom in Media will help to foster public debate in the media concerning this very issue and attempt to expand the right of free speech for all by helping people gain access to the media. Finally, we will conduct fund raising events and produce a newsletter and website to both educate the citizenry and collect moneys to allow us to operate. |
