EKTA - A South Asian Progressive NetworkEKTA was recently formed in the San Francisco Bay area as an organization seeking to bridge the gap between various communities originating in South Asia through innovative programming, community mobilizing and coalition-building. Our monthly desi spoken word events have been our first effort at building a creative community space. The desi spoken word events have enabled people to share poetry, stories, music, political expression, comedy skits, and video in a open and safe environment that encourages artistic socio-political expression. Many of the presenters have never shared their work in a public forum before, while others are experienced writers and poets. Although the presenters and audience have been predominantly South Asian, all communities have been welcomed at our spoken word events. We have already successfully held three spokenword events and are currently planning our fourth spokenword event for Oct. 14th. In addition, we are currently planning a film festival composed of fifteen documentaries from South Asia to be screened in January 2001. Other planned projects include a conference for social activists from the South Asian community, a youth camp for high school students, and fundraising efforts for grass-roots development projects in South Asia.
