Family Challenge, Inc.
Family Challenge is a private, non-profit organization providing transitional housing and other essential services to family units during the crisis of homelessness. Dedicated to the preservation and empowerment of families, Family Challenge has housed over 50 families since 1994. Hard data shows the desperate need for transitional housing in Yavapai County. Our facility was full within one week of opening, and has had to turn away two to five families nearly every week. That is about 150 families per year - TURNED AWAY!
Recognizing that homeless families have a broad range of needs, beyond just a roof over their heads, Family Challenge seeks to assist in providing for material, emotional and spiritual needs 7 days a week. This includes many things such as stable housing, food, clothing, toys, toiletries, laundry facilities, transportation, referral services and phone access. There are numerous emergency issues, including medical and legal that families in crisis face and need assistance with. In house educational groups include parenting, life skills and 12 step groups.
Support continues beyond the stay at Family Challenge. We assist in locating permanent housing, help set up new households. transport possessions and love to help celebrate the occasion. On-going support and follow-up is provided and parents may continue to attend on-going groups. Many give back to the community through volunteer work and assisting/mentoring new families that come here.
We are located in a fully equipped 6 bedroom house in Cottonwood where residents may stay for 3 to 18 months. The need for transitional housing far outweighs the capacity of the current site. There fore, we are actively seeking funding for a new, multi-family facility. Our ideal site would have a minimum of 18 units to house families for up to two years. Given a minimum 6-9 month stay, the new facility would keep 36 families intact and would prevent homelessness for some 125 adults and children per year.
We are actively seeking people, businesses and organization that can assist with this very needed service and hope that you will consider becoming part of this project.
